When I saw people shouting "Train!!!" in chat I used to think there was a train station you could use to get around.
When I was doing a mission, I was in the one with the Omni train station bassed map, and thought "This is how I could get on that train!", spent ages in that mission waiting for a train to come pick me up .... it never did.
"Train" was to me the action of getting better at someting with practice, for very...very...long....and to finally to crack the riddle of what "crat" meant took even longer.
i used to think that Euemedies in the subway was an actual real player.. so whoever named their toon that had a lot of hate tells to logon to!
I remember my first experience with AO all too well.
Back in the days I started with a fixer in the old backyards. I ran around them, leveling and figuring out how to attack. After about 3 hours I finally dinged level 2 ><
Next day I figured out how to chat and started to talk to the people, still being in the backyard. With the time I wondered why I am soo alone there while couple of dozen people were talking in the Neut OOC. Ran around for several hours again to find the people talking around. 6 days later... yes 6 days.. I still ran around in the backyard, leveled to 10 orso meanwhile and finding only greys giving me no XP anymore.
On the 8th day I started to ask where all the guys were and they said Borealis. Of course I didn't know what or who this Borealis was so I kept bugging them.
On the 10th day I suddenly saw another guy running around in the backyard and started to talk with him. After a while he said he had to run for Borealis and I simply followed him. That day I discovered that one could actually leave the backyard and ended up in Borealis.
For 10 days I really thought the whole game was only about the backyard, how lucky I was to finally find the "real game" .... took me only 20-30 hours in the backyard to figure
Do you see the horizon?

Hehe, don't I know it..
I knew how to get out into OA, so at L3 I made it into Wartorn.. shortly after zoning I respawned in the BY again. Seemingly rats are omnivores.. ^^
Tried it again, stayed in OA but this time I didn't hug the city wall so I promptly got lost.
I had learned to /terminate so I gave up nearly a level (no pool in '01) and then I stayed in the BY til L8 or so..
During the ceasefire I went to Trade, no map, got lost and decided on a quiet corner for a /terminate.. Neat way to get back, btw, but still expensive in XP to use the Soldier Grid.
for a good while I didn't stray too far from the main Clan areas after that.

Some noob/froob teamed me just so he/she could ask for creds. Has that happened to anyone? lol
Me and my friend who both started at the same time were about lvl 30 neutrals and we wanted to go to ToTW. Of course we had no idea that we could go to Rome and get warped to ToTW, so the shortest path was through Tir. When we first got killed by the big guard near the gate, we decided to change the strategy: we /sneaked around the corners, waiting for him to turn his back and stuff. When he killed us again we thought: wtf but we were so careful, how the f*** could he see us?!
The solution? We ran to ToTW from Varmint Woods and afterwards decided to go clan because the run was too long and Tir was a clan outpost.
Ahh, I still remember the first time I started play Anarchy Online like it just happened last night
My first char is Neutral, still learning about the game, living in the ruin in backyard training ground
Then decide to make Omni-Tek char and see how it goes, found the backyard, then somehow, got the urge to go to Borealis backyard, so went to Rome, open the Dovve map, scroll the map and found Borealis
Wow ...i said to myself when I see the distance between Rome and Borealis then started to run to Borealis from Rome, level 4
Yes, i don;t know that there is whompah that take people fast between place that time, not to mention The Grid
Took nearly couple hours, and i got to see some nice scenery
p/s Why there're 2 wink emote? XD
When I started anarchy online I rolled NT. Always played mages in rpg's
What I remember is that I got very angry at my soldier RL friend cause they had nanos. It was like a warrior casting spells, and he had shield nano and a big gun. How unfair.
After outlevling backyard I went around in Tir, managed somehow to pull a mission. Description said it was in Tir, but I had no idea where. So I checked every door in Tir. Did this for a week or so, untill I had to go outside Tir for mission. Got emo when the mish wasn't in Tir, and AO was so huge I didn't have a chance finding entrance. Then someone told me how to open minimap and upload mission to map =)
hehe did the same with missions back when I started. Ran around Tir and Tir County looking for the mission entrance.
Also remember using a gun with 12s attack or recharge time on my first char that was a soldier. Took me ages to kill the green mobs in the mishes.
Also didnt figure out quite how the treamtent labs worked so I healed upw ith healdelta between mobs.

Seems to be an all-time favourite : did the same when I started first toon on Noob Island => sitting and waiting for heal/nano to recharge and noticing that each time I gained a level, it took more time because the HP/nano to refill was getting larger. I thought it was a really bad game design
Another funny is when I was level 30-ish in ToTW, I was still carrying QL9 Electronicums I had bought from the 2nd Hand vendor in the Backyard. Took me ages to kill one green cultist and couldn't even imagine soloing 2.
I had no clue (and no creds) where to get better guns : I didn't know you could actually buy stuff elsewhere than in Shops.. So, as a good all-round Advy, I specialised in healing and I thought I was doing OK till a team member asked what type of gun I was using (we were near Re-animator at that time and I then sensed something was wrong with my toon. Took me many levels and lots of reading to ungimp
I deleted my first-ever toon because he was stuck in geometry and i didn't know you could /stuck or /terminate. Fortunately he was only lvl 4 or so.
A few days later im lft outside of Totw on a lvl 25ish enfo in mismatched froob armor. Some omnis come to me and tell me "We will take you in our team, but only if you show that you can mongo".
And that's how i discovered what a flag is

Nice thread.
Ok - wanna laugh ?
My first toon was attrox enf - had to reroll him after a few weeks because:
1. Left ICC Shutleport without any vital equipment (no light bar, no startup nanos, no newcomer armor, no NCU belt ) - I thought that killing monsters is all I need.
2. Used 2hb beam from subway until level 40 (looked cool)
3. Tried to equip morphing memory from subway without belt (finally got belt at lvl 20ish)
4. Wore combination of all available types of armors - not a nice view
5. Increased all important skills like adventuring, ground vehicles (Kodaiks are cheap) and map navigation
6. After installing first sets of implants I felt so ubah (they were QL 10)
7. Nano / buffs ??? What are they ???
Prolly more but those I can remember now. Thankfully this char no loner exists.
In my defence, I got to say thet I had no problems with whoompas, grid or other typical noob problems.
