I'd like to have control over my mezz to calm adds and not spam vicinity chat with 'nah..I don't feel like" =x I've tried /macro /pet "Duoco" attack but that doesn't seem to work.

I like to use scripts for this:
/macro Petname /petname.txt
(/pet "Zhok the Abomination" rename MrAdequate
/pet "Mortificant the Eternal" rename MrPointy
/pet "Tumulten" rename MrConfusing)
/macro Heal /Heal.txt
(/pet "MrPointy" Heal
/pet "MrPointy" chat "<font color=red>Healing %t.</font>")
/macro Attack /attack.txt
(/pet "MrAdequate" attack
/pet "MrAdequate" chat "<font color=red>Attacking %t.</font>"
/pet "MrConfusing" attack)
/macro Behind /behind.txt
(/pet "MrAdequate" behind
/pet "MrConfusing" behind)
/macro MezzOnly /Mezzonly.txt
(/pet "MrConfusing" attack
/pet "MrConfusing" chat "<font color=red>Mezzing %t.</font>")
/macro AttackOnly /Attackonly.txt
(/pet "MrAdequate" attack
/pet "MrAdequate" chat "<font color=red>Attacking %t.</font>")
Makes it nice and easy to control critters.
small tip on the behind, do:
/pet wait
/pet behind (or follow)
this makes it correctly clear it's hatelist.
/pet behind or follow don't always correctly clear the hatelist which could cause your pet to run back to a previous target when his newly received target dies.

Plus our beloved professional's Petnamer tool. That thing can write the scripts for you and is very easy to use.
To write the scripts yourself:
- Create a Script directory in your AO folder
- Pop up a text tool: notpad, write, word... whatever
- Write down one command per line
- Save the file
- In game, type /macro <shortcutname> /script nameoffile.extension
